Who can be a Solo PR Pro?

Nov 13, 2008 | Getting Started, PR Updates

While this blog has “PR” in the name, I believe professionals in a wide variety of disciplines can learn from each other here. Yes, I know many of these occupations don’t fall under the banner of public relations, but independents in these fields share many issues, challenges and success strategies in common, and there is often a lot of cross-over.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being an independent consultant is that you can tackle new areas – and expand the services you offer – based on your skills and interest. Solo PR Pros can be involved in:

  • Business consulting
  • Branding
  • Community relations
  • Corporate communications
  • Direct advertising
  • Event planning
  • Fundraising
  • Government relations
  • Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC)
  • Internal communications
  • Internet marketing
  • Investor relations
  • Journalism
  • Market research
  • Marketing
  • Media buying
  • Media relations
  • Non-profit management
  • Product management
  • Promotions
  • Public affairs
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Social media consulting
  • Training
  • Web design and management
  • Writing and editing

What's missing? Are there other areas Solo PR Pros should consider?

  3. Kellye,
Great advice! Don’t forget communication optimization (audits) and high-level strategy. I’ll read frequently!

  4. @Linda Those are great additions to the list — both are excellent services for independents to offer.

@Karen “Sharing the joy” is a terrific way to look at it! With your experiences and success as an independent, we can all learn a lot from you.

  5. Congratulations on the new blog launch. This is a much needed and welcomed resource. I believe everyone is in some way “in PR” so this information will have broad utility. Although I’m not directly in PR, as a Solopreneur I count many PR and Marketing Agencies among my clients. I would not trade one pen on my desk to return to the high stress life of Corporate America. Looking forward to sharing the joy and resources in this community.
