Social circles are important to communications professionals. As part of our work, we analyze, track, and create plans to reach and engage various networks of people. Social circles also personally benefit us as they offer support and very often are the source of professional referrals. Yet, organizational psychologist Tanya Menon says that we are missing out on great opportunities by staying comfortably in a social network of sameness. She points out how we would benefit from inefficiency in our networks and removing the filters that we automatically apply to new people we meet.
The topics in the talk also offer insight into how we can break down silos and challenge bias in our work as communicators. With all of the misfires that we have seen in recent months, it is well worth the 15 minutes to watch and learn how we can apply these principles to avoid missteps. We can use these ideas to expand our reach and find great opportunities for clients (and ourselves!) by tweaking how we view and utilize our social networks.
How do you ensure that you are not missing out on positive connections? Have you tried any of Menon's ideas? We'd love to hear from you in the comments below or on social media, using the #solopr hashtag.
